Kerb appeal: does your exterior impress?

When it comes to property, first impressions matter. Whether you’re trying to sell your home, welcome guests, or simply take pride in your space, kerb appeal — the attractiveness of a property as seen from the street — plays a powerful role. It’s the combination of landscaping, architecture, cleanliness  and small details that make a house look inviting.

Kerb appeal is consistently shown to increase the value of a home so is particularly crucial if you are selling, the condition of the exterior can reflect the condition inside and a tidy, beautiful exterior helps buyers imagine living there — and falling in love with the property. Even if you’re not selling, coming home to a welcoming, polished frontage simply feels good and makes you happy as you put your key in that beautifully painted front door.

Relatively easy fixes such as cleaning window sills and doors, tidying up overgrown gardens and jetwashing drives and pathways are solid first moves. Then making sure wooden windows are maintained and painted and keeping masonry fresh are important steps. Renovating tired porches and replacing UPVC work every 15 years or so are also key. Smaller fixes such as replacing tarnished letter boxes, cracked utility boxes and flaking house numbers punch above their weight in terms of lifting your exterior. Finally think about your exterior lighting, does the porch light work? Do you want the added safety of sensor lighting when you return home at night? Do you have any front garden features which merit focussed lighting?

Rendering in Hampton

We were recently tasked with renovating the exterior of a beautiful property on a corner plot in Hampton. The owner was a skilled stained glass renovator and so the property was quirky and original, part home and part store and workshop. The owner wanted to both improve the exterior appeal of the building and ensure that the structure was fully sound and waterproof. After extensive, detailed preparation we applied a flexible, silicon render which fully sealed the exterior and vastly improved the overall appearance. The finishing touch was to renovate the front door allowing the stained glass panels to shine. All in all a fantastic makeover which brought new life to this interesting building.

Front garden in Wandsworth

Another impactful recent project was the restoration of a front garden and path in Wandsworth. The front of the small block of flats had fallen into disrepair so we were tasked with sprucing it up. After clearing the overgrown garden, we lifted the old gravel and pathway and made repairs to the storage and utility boxes. A new smarter path and edging were installed along with fresh gravel and the finishing touch was a newly painted front door. A beautiful final effect which gave the exterior a much more appealing new look.

In summary, kerb appeal isn’t just about one feature — it’s about harmony. The colours, textures, and details should complement one another and suit the style of your home. From small tidy ups to a full scale reworking, there are improvements to suit all budgets.
